Baldur's Gate 3 Update Post
Aug. 30th, 2023 04:40 pmNot a lot to report on, but I spent a lot of time running down leads so I wanted to post anyway!
First, while some trans people worked on the game I have not found any trans rep. However, a lot of work was put into creating a lot of diversity for custom characters and giving them a smooth experience. There is a lot of being careful with language, a lot of gender neutral pronouns are used, etc.
So, if anyone is looking to get into this game and has questions about content or about how the character creator works, I can help out or give specific screenshots.
I don't know if they did this with trans custom characters in mind but since the sex scene I've seen are meant to work for male, female and NB custom characters, nothing in them is going to at odds with how your body is. Some scenes are oral, in some the custom character is bottoming for a male companion, etc. I haven't double checked all the sex scenes, but from what I have seen this does seem to carry through all the romances.
Second, trans people who worked on the game. Samantha Béart, who is the actor for Karlach, is non-binary and uses she/they pronouns. Abigail Thorn is the voice of an Act 2 character. (One who I did not run into due to my gameplay choices, but I hope to find her on my current playthrough.)
I found out a few details about the game and knew were to look by watching some videos and livestreams of Astarion's actor, Neil Newbon. Note: since Neil, Samantha and all those cast for major characters did both the voice and the motion capture I will be referring to them as actors, not voice actors. They spent years physically acting out the scenes. If I find out anything more, I'll update this post and give a heads up that I've done so.
I'd heard references to a transwoman character in act 3. The character being talked about was Lucretious Bringer of the Night. She is a drag queen and there is nothing to indicate she is trans. She is played by a drag queen, Vinegar Strokes and he also refers to her as a drag queen.
Basically, as soon as I met her I was like 'that's a drag queen'

But, to be thorough I did her questline. Maybe it would turn out that she is both a drag queen and a transwoman later. I did dark rituals in the undercity to find clown body parts to get all her dialogue, just so you know how hard I go on my research!
I also looked up the actor:

So yeah, mysterious drag queen, hints of connection to the storyline concerning Myrna, but nothing to indicate this is trans rep. Considering how careful Larian was been and that there are trans people on staff, I doubt they aren't clear on what the difference is.
But, I am glad I thoroughly ran it all down.
As a general comm update, I do have some other posts in the works but am still trying to run down some details. Hopefully, in a few weeks I can start to post things I've been working on.
