Even though the video game was two installments, the second game was very long and it's believed that it will take 2-3 seasons to cover it all. So, likely we wont see Lev, the transmasc character, until season 3. I've seen no info on him being cast yet. Given that he'd supposed to be very young, they will likely wait to cast him one S3 gears up, rather than have him cameo in 2. But, I could be wrong and maybe he's been secretly cast and we will see him.

This BlueSky account says it's the official account of the project. It started as a decentralized event so, you can do this while ignoring official stuff if you want. Here is the website with links to their twitter, tiktok, etc. There is also a bingo card and a Storygraph challenge.

If you find good reccs lists or and good content for the event let us know! Are you doing the read-a-thon? Do you have a book list for it? Are you looking for reccs? Let us know!

If you've escaped hearing about this, you live a better life than me.

Anyway, a movie about a trans woman with a trans lead has been showered in award nominations and actually won a bunch of awards in the lead up to the Oscars. They are one away from tying for most Oscar noms. But, there are a lot of problems with this film. I think how Amanda put it is best, it blew up among the awards crowd and is now being shunned by that same crowd for external reasons, when it should be seen as a shitty movie based on being a shitty movie.

The Oscars are soon and I feel like this is the best video I've seen on the situation. I wanted to post something about this because a trans woman getting a lead actress nom is a first, but also this whole thing where this mess became some weird critical darling is... a mess. (Also, I like posting good stuff here, not talking about how a historical Oscar nom went to a horrible racist, and also talking about all the ways this movie pissed off Mexicans could easily fill a separate three house video essay)

There may be a better video out there, but I haven't wanted to do a deep dive on this. This clip of Trixie and Katya talking about it pretty much sums up my feelings.

Beyond: Two Souls has been licensed to be a TV series and may already be in it's development phase. Elliot Page's production company is heading the project. In the original game, Elliot starred as the female lead many years ago.

I haven't played the game, but I am very aware of David Cage as a creator that critics tend to hate with a burning passion, sometimes with very good reasons. But also he's made a number of AAA games because a lot of people tend to play the and some even get very enduring followings. People playing Heavy Rain used to draw crowds at conventions. He's best known for Detroit: Become Human.

Right now there is a clip of David Lynch doing a cameo in Twin Peaks where he says 'Fix your heart or die'. The context of that clip is his character talking about telling off transphobes:

(Most gifs I've seen change 'their' to 'your')

David Duchonvy (of X-Files fame) plays Denise Bryson, a transwoman, on the show, who is defended by Lynch's character. For a more in-depth (and informed, I haven't watched Twin Peaks myself) look at everything Here is a Lily Simpson video on the topic. With that clip/gif suddenly everywhere, I wanted people to know what the context is when they see it. Despite Lily's claim in the video that the quote is ubiquitous in the trans community and at marches and stuff, I can tell you that it's not in my neck of the woods. So, an explainer is good.

My earlier post about the new Dragon Age is here. That post has a few updates thanks to comments from [personal profile] feurioo.

And I am going to drop one article under a cut that probably isn't spoilerly, but I am not playing the game myself so I can't but sure. Read more... )I hope everyone playing the game has a great time! If you find out neat things, or have cool experiences, relevant to this community, please post or comment about them!

Here is a blog post from Charlie Jane Anders about a Brazillian TV show involving time travel. The main character keeps going back to her 15 year old self.

"And most of all, I love Anita’s best friend, a trans girl named Camila, whose transition is handled with a lot of sensitivity and realness. Nila, who plays the 15-year-old version of Camila, was actually going through her transition while making the show. And trans actor/writer Alice Marcone, who plays the adult Camila, actually wrote two episodes of the show’s first season."

More details at her post. The idea of seeing a trans character at different points in time is interesting.

(I should space out these posts, but that would mean keeping track of things)

Since I mentioned it last post and I don't think it's been posted about, here's some info on Sense8. The show was co-created by the Wachowski sisters and J. Michael Straczynski. It featured 8 connected characters and one of them was a trans woman named Nomi. Nomi's character trailer. This was a very important show for a lot of people, but it wasn't my jam so if anyone wants to share their feelings on the show please do. Also, if you haven't seen it and are looking for more trans media to check out, it did initially get cancelled on a cliffhanger, but Netflix did a two and a half hour series finale to wrap things up that was well received. So, it's a queer sci fi show with an ending!

"Because as has been noted, the original plan was to have Delenn start out male and emerge from the chrysalis female; so we made the makeup in the pilot very male. Once we realized we couldn't make the voice work without having her dubbed completely, there was no need to retain it" Per a tweet from J. Michael Straczynski

This is a bit of a different post because it's about a scrapped trans storyline that still left and impression on the resulting project. JMS has confirmed it a number of times and points to technical issues, but since the same show had to keep cutting the lesbian storyline to dodge cancellation, it's possible there is more to he story or that the show would not have been greenlit with the original plot.

Also, this was a surprise to me because I was a serious Bab5 fan back in the day and super into both Delenn and their actress Mira Furlan. I could quote the show at length while discussing it and vividly remember getting into arguments about whether something gender was going on with Delenn. By 'arguments' I mean I'd say anything about it and get shouted down. I had totally forgotten all of this until I heard someone mention the whole 'Delenn was meant to be trans' thing the other day. Young me wandering around cons in a giant T shirt with Delenn's face on the front and a B5 logo on the back correcting people incorrectly quoting the show was onto something.

A lot of my searches for more info lead to dead links at a website called The Council of Zoom, but here is the Wayback Machine to the rescue.

Two notable things about this story:

* JMS has been pushing for a reboot of this show as it was a massive passion project of his. If it happens we may see that and other storylines restored.

* Sense8, seen as many as a landmark piece of trans rep in media, was co-created by JMS and the Wachowski sisters, and he was a writer on the show.

I haven't watched any B5 since shortly after the show ended. I know some people have had this as their main fandom all these years. If anyone has some info to add to this, let me know. Also, I may finally rewatch it after all these years (assuming I can get past TKO, season 1 has some rough spots)

This is a game I will be keeping an eye on because the Dragon Age series has had landmark representation for both sexuality and gender in video games. Krem has been discussed to death online simply for being a trans character in a major studio AAA game with an actual storyline.

This is a recording of the Q&A they did on their discord. I've got the time stamp to where they talk about character creation. Players will be able to set gender and pronouns, and non-binary will be an option.

It's still early days so we don't know if any of the characters or LIs will be trans or if being non-binary will have much of an effect on the romances. One thing I will be keeping an eye out for in the pre-release info about the game is any mention of Maevaris Tilani, a trans woman. She appeared in one of the comics fleshing out the lore on the region where this game was originally supposed to take place. At one point it sounded like she'd be a character we'd meet, but that was a long time ago and the game has undergone a lot of iterations. Still, something to look out for.

I Wish You All The Best is a 2019 novel about a nonbinary teenager. A movie based on the novel is currently being shown at film festivals. IMDB lists the release date as... last month but also it's been shown at the festivals where people are typically shopping for distribution for films so I am not 100% sure what the dealio is. Also, there is no trailer for the film I can find, just one scene has been put out as a teaser.

(Someday soon I am going to have to learn about the film festival scene and how film buying / oscar qualifying works at these events to make sense of some of the articles I read.)

Anyway, the film exists and I assume in the coming months we'll hear something about how to watch it outside of festivals like SXSW.

Monkey Man

I've seen a bit about Monkey Man in the past few days since it's opening this weekend and a lot of people are interested to see how it does. It's Dev Patel's directorial debut. The film was produced by Netflix, who then dropped it for being too political. Jordan Peele then came on as a producer after seeing a screening of the film and now it's opening in theaters. I am not fully sure what it's about, since I am mostly seeing it described as 'John Wick but about Hindu identity'.

The film takes place in India and shows something of the hijra, or third gender, community. By including multiple trans and gender non-conforming roles, Monkey Man makes strides towards this representation while also introducing audiences to a subculture in India with which they may not be familiar.

(Note - I am only vaguely familiar with Indian culture and am trusting entertainment articles, wikipedia and google to make sure I've got my wording right. If anyone knows of a good resource on hijra people, let me know)

You can't play Overwatch 2's non-binary hero in competitive play yet, but they will be in the upcoming season. As of today, you can use them in training arenas to get ready. Here is an overview of their abilities:

Nimona is temporarily up on Youtube for free, legally. I don't know if it's region locked or not. Sounds like this is probably part of an Oscars campaign for the film.

Maybe I should watch it for a fifth time! Or is it sixth by now?
