If you've escaped hearing about this, you live a better life than me.

Anyway, a movie about a trans woman with a trans lead has been showered in award nominations and actually won a bunch of awards in the lead up to the Oscars. They are one away from tying for most Oscar noms. But, there are a lot of problems with this film. I think how Amanda put it is best, it blew up among the awards crowd and is now being shunned by that same crowd for external reasons, when it should be seen as a shitty movie based on being a shitty movie.

The Oscars are soon and I feel like this is the best video I've seen on the situation. I wanted to post something about this because a trans woman getting a lead actress nom is a first, but also this whole thing where this mess became some weird critical darling is... a mess. (Also, I like posting good stuff here, not talking about how a historical Oscar nom went to a horrible racist, and also talking about all the ways this movie pissed off Mexicans could easily fill a separate three house video essay)

There may be a better video out there, but I haven't wanted to do a deep dive on this. This clip of Trixie and Katya talking about it pretty much sums up my feelings.

Johanne Sacreblue is a Mexican trans woman's parody film in response to Emilia Perez, starring actual Mexican people. This link includes subtitles in English, since Johanne Sacreblue is in Spanish and French.
